Slipcovers | An Emerging Trend in Home Decor

Recently, I posted a story about an emerging trend that I have noticed in the design field. Many of my clients, and myself included, were thinking about slipcovers.

Now we all know about slipcovers; the industry is full of easy pull-on options that are quite inexpensive, but not quite right. You know the type--they are designed to stretch and fit any style of sofa, but if the arm of your sofa, for example, is too rounded, it is not going to look right. And for this reason, the slipcover has been given a bad name.

Also, if you buy a slipcovered sofa, chances are the fabric under the slipcover is a muslin fabric and not suitable to stand on its own if you remove the cover.

I decided to slipcover my own current sofa to see if there was a better way.

My sofa was upholstered in a light grey linen fabric, and I thought I wanted a warmer palette as the colder weather descended upon us. What I was really after were two different looks, so going to the right re-upholsterer was really important.

It is important to know that slipcovers have come a long way. Back in the day, we had a sloppier type of slipcover, we called it shabby chic. I actually had a couch like that and loved its imperfect perfection.

But not only can you still get shabby chic style today, you can get a cleaner version and also a more tailored, modern style.

Since my sofa has a track arm (square and wide), it was important to me to maintain the clean lines of the sofa.

So no skirt, in fact, the slipcover is velcroed along the front and side for a clean edged look.

Yes, the cost of a slipcover is not cheap if you want one that no one knows is a slipcover. But, the benefits are great. Not only do I have a warm, velvet cover that takes me through the cold winter nights, I also have a fresh look when spring beckons.
