The Beauty of Thoughtful Storage
As summer winds down, I always find myself faced with the same annual challenge: where am I going to put everything?
Outdoor cushions, planters, lanterns, entertaining pieces, extra throws and all the seasonal things that make summer so enjoyable suddenly need to find a home. It’s amazing how quickly our belongings accumulate, and how quickly a closet can go from organized to overflowing.
This is when I’m reminded just how important good storage is.
Storage may not be the first thing you think about when designing a beautiful home, but it is one of the elements that can have the greatest impact on how a home functions. When everything has a place, spaces feel calmer, more organized and much easier to live in.
Making Every Inch Work Harder
That was especially important for a recent basement renovation we completed for an active family of four. Their existing basement lacked organization and storage, so our goal was to make better use of every available square foot without making the space feel overly utilitarian.
One of our biggest changes was relocating the existing kitchenette. Moving it freed up the area beneath the stairs, allowing us to create a generous walk-in storage room. It now provides a dedicated home for seasonal décor, luggage, sports equipment and household essentials—things that need to be accessible but don't necessarily need to be on display.
The new kitchenette became a much more functional beverage station, with a panelled refrigerator, sink, wine fridge, microwave and extensive custom cabinetry. Open shelving provides a place for dishes, glassware and favourite collectibles, while closed cabinetry keeps everything else neatly tucked away.
Storage Doesn't Have to Look Like Storage
In the main living area, we continued to incorporate storage without allowing it to dominate the room.
We relocated the fireplace and created a new focal point with a linear electric fireplace surrounded by a porcelain feature wall. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry on either side provides substantial concealed storage for board games, blankets, serving pieces and seasonal items.
Rather than using a lot of open shelving, we opted for pantry-style cabinetry. This gave the family significantly more usable storage while maintaining the clean, contemporary look we wanted for the space.
I think this is one of the most important lessons when it comes to storage: the best solutions don't always announce themselves. Sometimes the most successful design decisions are the ones you barely notice because they simply make everyday life easier.
Designing for Real Life
The basement was designed to be much more than a place to store things. A large sectional gives the entire family room to gather for movie nights and entertaining, while two console tables with stools behind the sofa provide flexible space for homework, games, casual meals or extra seating.
Even the bathroom was designed with storage in mind, with wall-to-wall custom cabinetry providing plenty of practical space while maintaining the clean, polished aesthetic of the room.
Warm wood tones, neutral finishes, porcelain surfaces and large-scale artwork bring softness and personality to the contemporary design.
When Everything Has a Place
Good storage isn't about hiding everything away. It's about creating a home where the things you use and love can coexist comfortably without creating visual clutter.
As another summer comes to an end and we begin putting away the things that made the season special, it's a good reminder that thoughtful design should support real life—not just look beautiful.
When everything has a place, a home feels calmer, more organized and simply more enjoyable to live in.
And to me, that's the real beauty of good design.
