6 Design Tips I’ve Been Sharing with Clients for Over 20 Years

After more than two decades as an interior designer, I’ve learned that good design isn’t about following trends — it’s about making thoughtful choices that improve how you live every day. Over the years, I’ve shared these same six tips with countless clients, and they continue to make a lasting difference in every project.

#1. Invest in the best sofa you can afford.

Your sofa is one of the hardest-working pieces in your home. Choose quality construction with a hardwood frame and durable fabric — it’s worth every penny. And don’t assume custom means unaffordable; a well-built custom sofa can often be priced similarly to retail but last far longer. Your back (and your future self) will thank you.

#2. Test paint colours at noon.

Lighting changes everything. Midday light reveals a colour’s truest undertone, so always check your paint samples around noon and again in the evening under artificial light before you commit.

#3. Panel your appliances for a seamless look.

A paneled fridge or dishwasher blends beautifully into cabinetry, creating a clean, cohesive kitchen. It’s often more affordable than you think and adds instant polish.

#4. Don’t skip drawer organizers.

Custom or modular drawer organizers maximize space and efficiency — especially in kitchens and bathrooms. It’s a small upgrade that makes a big difference in daily life.

#5. Customize your closets.

Whether you live in a compact condo or a sprawling home, proper closet organization keeps you sane and adds value. Custom closets are one of those upgrades buyers truly notice.

#6. Hire a designer early.

Working with a designer from the start helps you make smarter decisions, avoid costly mistakes, and bring your vision to life seamlessly. It’s an investment that pays off in every way.

After 20 years, I can confidently say — it’s the details that make the design.
