The Mini Shelf
In my last newsletter, I wrote about cabinet-built ins which were becoming longer, sleeker, and resembling more of a furniture piece. Instead of formal attached upper shelving units, the trend is moving towards adding artwork or mirrors. In other words, less space for collectibles and definitely more of a streamlined look.
However, we can never completely negate the benefits of a good shelf. Enter the mini shelf.
I have long used the Ikea Lack shelf. Properly anchored to the wall, it looks fresh, modern and even comes in different colors and lengths! Shelves can be made from laminates, natural woods or even metals. I tend to prefer a 3-to-4-inch profile to add some visual weight.
Here are some creative ways to use a shelf or shelves in your home.
Bedroom
If you need extra space above or beside your end table, a shelf is a great option. Lamps, chargers and books can quickly take up real estate on your end table or adding a shelf is a great solution.
Bathroom
Bathrooms are always in need of more storage. Adding a shelf by the bathroom vanity is a smart way to house daily necessities like cotton balls, perfumes and make up. It also looks pretty.
If you have a free-standing bathtub, a mini shelf can hold a glass of wine, candles or even some bath salts and loofahs.
I seldom use towel rings in a bathroom but a small shelf can hold pretty decorative hand towels, scented soaps or candles.
Kitchen
I love shelves in a kitchen and am still considering doing two on either side of my cooktop and exhaust fan in my own kitchen. These shelves are great for storing necessary bowls, cookbooks, pictures and kitchen utensils. Don't be afraid to use multiple shelves. They look fresh and modern and make sense in smaller spaces.
