Where Fashion Inspires Home

Name any awards show and I am watching the pre-show red carpet walk! It is such fun to see everyone dressed to the nines and to pick my favourites of the night.

With the recent Met Ball fashion extravaganza, I thought it would be interesting to see how some of the 2024 fashions compared to the 2024 interior design trends.

The theme was called Sleeping Beauties-Reawakening Fashion and was based on the 1962 short story by J.G. Ballard called “The Garden of Time”. Stylists and stars then created their special interpretations for the evening.

I selected 4 color categories from the 2024 Met show and matched some of my favourite fashion looks to them, plus added some room setting that also mimicked the theme.

Here they are: Textural White, Silver & Grey, Black & White, and Blue & Green.

TEXTURAL WHITE

Star: Greta Lee

Firstly, I loved Greta Lee in “The Morning Show”, and everything else she is in for that matter. Her dress was by Loewe and was both sculptural and sheer, but also edgy and strong. A perfect combination.

In design, adding lines and curves, smooth and rough, create a visual interest that only a one color room can deliver on. Our eyes travel through a room and, when there is an obvious mix of textures, therein lies the magic of a successful interior.

SILVERY & GREY

Star: Elle Fanning

Elle Fanning’s Balmain gown was gorgeous and glossy. Sculptural birds adored each shoulder and was both modern and classic. Her hair and jewelry were so on point.

Silver and warm grey tones still dominate the home industry. The coolness, mixed with warmer tones, always works.

BLACK & WHITE

Star: Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman’s gown illustrated how classic and timeless good design is. A recreation of a 1950’s Balenciaga gown, this showed to perfection.

My design ethos has always been that if you keep the high dollar investments neutral, you will always be able to change it up. This dress is beautiful and shows that contrast and counterpoint always works.

BLUE & GREEN

Star: Zendaya

Zendaya’s first gown on the carpet was a blue and green Maison Margiela Artisanal couture gown and her edgy goth make-up took it to new heights. It was based on a 1999 Dior dress; another homage to the past.

From a design perspective, blue and green were often not paired together, but I love the collaboration especially if the green tones have blue undertones. I often pair navy and sea green together in cottages but also in more traditional environments.
