Follower Questions Answered

Straight from my DMs, here are a few of the questions my followers are asking.

Q: How do you select light fixtures in an open concept space?

A: Light fixtures are the jewelry in the room and finding the right ones to finish a space is very important because it has such visual impact.

When you are dealing with an open-concept, it is important that there be a common denominator. That could mean that the finish is the same-for example, all the fixtures are gold. Or every fixture has a touch of crystal or glass. Maybe the design style is very modern or traditional.

Whatever you choose, start with a main room because that creates a good starting point and work back from there. Remember to notice sightlines. I sometimes stand at the front door and look at where the light fixtures are and then decide which one should be the eye catcher.

Q: How can I give a builder-grade cookie-cutter condo an upgrade?

A: Builder grade condos are often quite neutral. There are many ways you can upgrade and elevate this type of space.

Firstly, start with color. Re-painting the walls is a good way to start but consider also painting out the interior doors. I love using a dark color like Benjamin Moore's Jet Black. Or use it on a back wall of a bedroom or living room. It adds instant drama.

Change out the light fixtures. If budget is a concern-swap out the dining room light or pendant lights in the kitchen.

Add some custom shelving.

Swap out cabinet hardware in the kitchen or bathroom.

Be intentional in your decor pieces. Buy great artwork and add some lighting to enhance it.

Adding touches like these can give your condo life and detail!

Q: I am looking to refresh my bedroom. Should I be buying a matched set?

A: Spring is coming and what better way to welcome it than re-doing your bedroom! There are so many choices available. I would probably not commit to a complete suite but rather start with a headboard that could be wood or fabric. From there look at the end tables and add something different. An end table made of mirror is a nice choice. I also would not necessarily match these two. Consider a small chest of drawers and an end table in the same finish. Or two chest of drawers for added storage. Dressers can be made of wood and depending on whether you need two pieces—these can be in the same finish.

Bedlinens are the finishing touch. There are so many different price points but do think about adding a coverlet and a duvet. These make the room look luxurious and comfortable!
