To Build In or Not to Build In?
There was a time in my design past that "built-in" cabinetry was recommended in almost every family or living room I designed. They just made sense.
Usually a shade of white (does Cloud White ring a bell to any of you?) and built up as far up as could be allowed. This was so great for additional lower storage while the upper shelves were perfect to display beloved collectibles.
A new take on built-ins.
While we still recommend built-ins especially in space-deprived condos, we are beginning to favour long and low cabinets in those same spaces. These can be built-ins or stand alone cabinets.
Reminiscent of the lounges of the "70's, their nostalgic characteristics is why we are seeing more of them these days.
This look feels both relaxed and modern with the added advantage of creating accessible storage.
Add textures and artwork.
I love that they stretch the perception of space and are good-looking dropping grounds for trays of cocktails and accessories. They also add textural interest especially if you use a wood or mirrored finish.
Mirrors or impactful artwork do especially well over them. If you need more shelving, then floating shelves can be used to great effect here as well.
Visual height and balance.
Those shelves can hold barware, books and photo frames and come at a much lower cost than more structured units.
The height of these pieces are also a key factor. We usually choose a height that aligns with the tables in the room.
And in order for visual balance, we usually add some vertical height. This could be as simple as large plants, lamps or even artwork.
With so many options available, the design possibilities are endless…
Because there are so many furniture and pricing options available, it is exciting to see how space can be configured using this fresh, yet tried and true, design trend!
