Walk A Mile in my Shoes
I have always enjoyed walking. It is easy, affordable and good for you!
Each morning, I get up at 5:15 am, brush my teeth, put on my runners and outerwear and meet my neighbour, Joe. We walk briskly, chat nonstop for more than an hour clocking about 16,000 steps.
We walk rain or shine, and have been walking partners for over 2.5 years! It is and continues to be one of the nicest parts of my day.
Having someone waiting for you at the end of your driveway is a good incentive to get out there and to keep on doing it day after day.
It is no surprise that walking, especially as you age, has wonderful health benefits. These include improved sleep habits, better mental health and a lower risk of heart disease and dementia.
Walking is a good long term exercise and I especially enjoy the social benefits chatting with my friend.
Here are some things I consider essential for my early mornings.
#1. Get a Good Supportive Pair of Shoes
When I first started walking, I developed plantar fasciitis. I immediately went to a foot specialist and got a good pair of orthotics and a recommended walking shoe. Those inserts have saved me and whatever the season, I pop them into my footwear and am good to go!
#2. Bring a Flashlight
This is so important especially for anyone walking in the dark. Using my pocket light allows me to avoid icy patches and rain puddles.
#3. Wear Reflective Headgear or Arm Bands
Because my walks begin in the dark, I realized how important it was to be seen by on-coming drivers who may not expect to see people out and about so early in the morning.
#4. Take Your Phone
Keeping your phone with you makes sense from a safety perspective and for taking pictures of amazing sunrises!
#5. Wear Lightweight Outwear
I invested in a lightweight winter jacket (by Rodsak) with a deep hood. Not only does it keep me cosy and protected, but it is light enough to carry on my back because it has built-in straps. Brilliant!
